On Sat 28th Oct, Inna Rhythm’s Kwame Daniels steps into the Bullitt Courtyard for an outdoor Autumn Boogie Club, bringing musical heat from disco to electronica, Afro beat to jazz.
Supporting Kwame on the night is close friend of Bullitt’s Ken Burrell. Ken has been a huge supporter of Bullitt’s music policy from day one, and we’ve had the pleasure of hosting his fine soul-ections on many occasions.
Back in the day, Ken brought Mo Wax beats to Vico’s, Philly disco to Morrison’s, and eclectic soulful sounds to many long-running radio shows.
But he’s always looking forward, obsessing over the new and how it can compliment the best of the old. We dig his chart and are sure you will too.
Yussef Dayes – Rust
South London producer/drummer is ubiquitous with what for me is album of the year ‘Black Classical Music’. This bass-driven smooth spiritual collab with boy genius Tom Misch crosses many paths but is still anchored in jazz.
Jalen Ngonda – Come Around and Love Me
From another top release this year, ticking the nu-soul sub-genre box. Jalen, based in Liverpool and signed to Daptone, takes a blend of classic and contemporary soul and adds emotion-drenched vocals with killer choruses (think Marvin or David R). This single is a taster for the album and showcases what will become a classic in its own right. One to watch!
Level 42 – Dune Tune
80’s pop-funk chart success Level 42 emerged out of the British jazz funk scene – this came from their 81 debut album that had the mighty Love Games on it (check it too). This has recently started to get rotation due to an edit.
Roberto Lodola -African Rhythms
Awesome groovy, edit of 1992 track, that is a cover of a Oneness of Juju song.
Arnie Love & The Lovettes – We’ve Had Enough
From 1981 this crosses the modern soul and disco collections, and the very rare original on Tap Records sells for £500 +. Made available for lesser mortals via the Numero Group a few years back. Don’t stop, boogie!
Dav Risen x Moresoul x Nani Experience – Grace & Mercy
A joint venture E.P. Dav is from South Africa, and it’s a soul-filled gospel house collection. Lift up your voice!
G.C. Cameron – If I Love You
Originally out in 1980 on short-lived UK Flamingo Records and re-released as part of the Record Store Day 2014 tranche. G. C. Cameron joined Motown and was lead singer of The Spinners and had hits like ‘It’s a Shame’. His solo career led him to Ian Levine’s Motorcity records and then for a touring stint with The Temptations.
Joss Moog – Forever Pimpin’
From the 2020 lp ‘20 Classics’, contains samples of the Factory’s dance pioneering ‘Love Tempo’ by Quango, Quango. Say no more.
Fabiano do Nascinento – Das Nuvens
More electronic/ambient/New Age than guitarist Fabiano’s previous work, ‘Das Nuvens’ is a lush imitate cinematic set.
Soul Bombs – Believe in Me
Disco syndrome and string heaven, released in August 23. All things are possible!
Ken Burrell plays an all-vinyl set from 8.30pm on Sat 28th Oct in Bullitt Courtyard alongside Kwame Daniels (Inna Rhythm) and JC (Bullitt). Admission, as always, is free.
